YouTube Supervised Experience is a feature designed to make the platform safer for children. It creates a restricted mode that filters out potentially inappropriate content. However, despite its intentions, we don't think it's a good enough solution to provide a truly safe environment for young viewers. In this article, we'll explain why.
Problem #1: Unreliable Filters
One of the primary concerns with YouTube Supervised Experience is the unreliability of its filters. While YouTube claims to make an effort to remove harmful content from the eyes of younger audiences, Google itself poses the disclaimer that it's impossible to guarantee that inappropriate videos won't slip through the cracks. This means that children could still be exposed to disturbing or offensive material, even when using the supervised mode.
Problem #2: Inability to Filter Out Low-Quality Content
Another limitation of YouTube Supervised Experience is its inability to filter out low-quality content that doesn't align with your values. Sure, you can get rid of the mature, adult and violent content, but even if a video isn't explicitly harmful, it may still be inappropriate for your child. For example, you may not want your child to watch videos that promote harmful stereotypes, unrealistic beauty standards, excessive consumerism or inappropriate language.
Problem #3: Reliance on Creator Judgment
YouTube Supervised Experience also relies on the creator's judgment of what is appropriate for children and what isn't. This can be problematic, as creators may have different standards than parents. Additionally, creators may be more concerned with getting views than with protecting children.
Why StreamU is a Superior Alternative
With StreamU, we offer a much superior alternative to YouTube Supervised Experience. Unlike YouTube, StreamU allows you to choose exactly what you want your children to watch. StreamU is the only platform where you can know exactly what your kids can watch on YouTube, ensuring they have a safe and enriching online streaming environment.
Unlike other platforms, StreamU doesn't simply restrict harmful content, but allows you to actively curate enriching content that aligns with your values.
While YouTube Supervised Experience is a step in the right direction, it's not enough to protect children from less-obviously harmful video content. Parents who want to provide a truly safe and educational online experience for their children should consider using a platform like StreamU.
