“I’m bored.” Most parents treat this as a problem to be solved. The research suggests it might be exactly what children need.
There’s a moment most parents know well. A child slumps onto the sofa, announces they have nothing to do, and waits. The path of least resistance is obvious – hand over a device, and the problem disappears. Within seconds they’re absorbed, quiet, and apparently content.
It works. That’s the problem.
The discomfort of boredom has become so immediately solvable that many children today rarely sit with it long enough to discover what comes next. And what comes next, when boredom isn’t immediately relieved, turns out to be rather important.
What boredom actually does
Boredom is not a neutral state. Neuroscientists studying the resting brain have found that when we’re not engaged in a directed task – when we’re bored, daydreaming, or letting our minds wander – a distinct network of brain regions becomes active. It’s called the default mode network, and its activity is associated with some of the most characteristically human mental processes: imagination, self-reflection, empathy, and the ability to project ourselves into future scenarios and other people’s perspectives.
In children, this matters enormously. The capacity to generate one’s own internal entertainment – to invent games, build imaginary worlds, pursue a line of thought for its own sake – is not a given. It’s a skill, and like most skills it develops through practice. A child who is never bored never develops the ability to be usefully alone with their own mind.
Research into creative thinking consistently finds that periods of unstructured mental time – what psychologists call “incubation” – are important precursors to creative insight. Ideas that feel stuck during active engagement often resolve during periods of apparent inactivity. Children who have regular experience of unstructured time develop stronger imaginative capacity than those whose every waking hour is scheduled or stimulated.
What content saturation actually looks like
This is worth being concrete about, because it’s easy to underestimate how thoroughly the content environment has changed.
A child with access to a smartphone or tablet in 2026 has effectively unlimited content available at all times. YouTube’s library contains over 800 million videos. There is no moment of the day that cannot be immediately filled with something to watch, play, or scroll through. The friction between boredom and stimulation has been reduced to a single tap. Part of what makes this so hard to resist is how autoplay is designed to work – removing every natural pause that might otherwise break the session.
The consequences aren’t dramatic in any individual instance. A child watching ten minutes of YouTube while waiting for dinner isn’t a crisis. The cumulative effect – of a childhood in which the experience of having nothing to do is always immediately resolved by a device – is harder to see but more significant.
What’s displaced is the experience of tolerance for unstructured time. The capacity to sit with discomfort long enough for something more interesting to emerge. The habit of generating internal entertainment rather than consuming external stimulation. These are not small things. They are foundational to self-regulation, creativity, and the kind of independent thinking that serves children well throughout their lives.
Less content, not no content
This is not an argument for removing screens. It’s an argument for intentionality about when they appear and why.
The distinction matters. A child who watches a considered selection of genuinely engaging content – who has developed preferences and interests that screens help them explore – is in a different position from one who reaches for a device the moment boredom arrives. The former is using content deliberately; the latter is using it to avoid an experience that would actually benefit them. This is the difference between mindful and passive screen time – and it matters more than the total number of minutes watched.
The goal isn’t less screen time for its own sake. It’s preserving the conditions in which boredom can do its work – which means not filling every available moment with stimulation, and not treating a child’s announcement of having nothing to do as an emergency requiring immediate resolution.
In practice, this means building some unstructured time into the day deliberately. It means resisting the impulse to hand over a device in every moment of transition or waiting. And it means being comfortable, as a parent, with a child who is briefly and visibly bored – knowing that what follows that discomfort is often more valuable than whatever would have been on the screen.
When children do watch, make it count
The corollary of protecting unstructured time is that screen time, when it happens, should be worth having. Content that genuinely engages curiosity, introduces new ideas, or develops a skill is a different kind of experience from passive consumption of whatever the algorithm serves next.
This is the tension at the heart of modern YouTube. The platform makes excellent content and terrible content equally available, and its recommendation engine has no interest in distinguishing between them. A child given unstructured access to YouTube is as likely to spend their time on low-quality, algorithmically-served content as on anything genuinely valuable – and probably more so, because the former is specifically designed to hold attention effortlessly. The screen isn’t the problem – the algorithm is.
The answer isn’t to ban YouTube. It’s to make deliberate choices about what’s available – so that when a child does choose to watch something, the field they’re choosing from is one you’re comfortable with.
